What is Music Therapy?
Music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based therapeutic approach that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. It involves a trained music therapist who is registered with a regulatory body (The Health and Care Professions Council in the UK), who may tailor musical interventions to promote healing, enhance wellbeing, and facilitate communication.
You don’t need to have any experience in playing an instrument to access music therapy - being open to exploring your creativity is all you need!
What might a music therapy session look like?
No music therapy session looks the same! Sessions are flexible and tailored to the needs and preferences of the client. In a session, we may:
Listen to music
Create music
Talk about music that is important to the client
Improvise with instruments and our voices
In music therapy, I believe that building on the therapeutic relationship is fundamental. Sessions will be primarily guided by the client, taken at their pace, and tailored to them. My role is not to teach music, but to support you in using music as a way to express and explore your emotions. My aim is to facilitate an environment where you feel safe, supported and able to express yourself. It is important to me to foster a non-judgemental atmosphere where you feel free to share your thoughts and feelings.
